Job Description

Job Title : Head – Coal Fired Power Plant (GM / Sr. GM Level)
Location : West Bengal
Department : Power Plant

1. Purpose: The main scope of the role is to manage overall operations and maintenance of the Coal Fired Power Plant. Drive overall productivity and economic functioning of the Coal Fire Power Plant. Ensuring the cost of power generation from the Coal Fired Power Plant remains less than the cost of obtaining power from the grid.

2. Reporting & Supervisory Relationships:
Reports to: EVP, Head Plant

Direct Reports:

1. Lead Operations
2. Lead Maintenance

Indirect Reports including total team size:

Total team size of …. (Management and Non-Management) employees across operations & maintenance functions.
Internal Business Process interaction:
Interacts with all Manufacturing, Engineering, Technology, Projects, Materials, Finance, HSEF, HR, Admin & Security etc., regularly

External interaction:
Interacts with Maintenance Service Provider, Director of Boiler, WBSETCL, OEMs, etc.

3. Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Pre-commissioning:  Lend operations and maintenance expertise to the projects teams currently commissioning the plant.
 Play an integral role in developing and managing the operations and maintenance procedures and budgets.
 Apply technical expertise determining maintenance and outage schedules factoring in economic factors.
 Play a key role in the establishment of safety, training & development, emergency response policies. Ensuring compliance to local/international standards and legal requirements.
 Manage the purchasing function of spares and fuel source (Coal) ensuring that the coal is of acceptable quality and sourced in a reliable and cost effective manner.
 Responsible for developing a team and engaging with labour in an effective and constructive manner and ensure a positive and productive work environment.

Job Description

Post-commissioning:
 Ensure 24 hour smooth functioning of the coal fired power plant with maximum efficiency and minimum downtime. Ensure maximum availability of plant machinery and correct operation standards.
 Plan generation of power and steam on the basis of captive demand of operating departments and achieve annual targets of power generation.
 Ensure achievement of optimum efficiencies of boilers, turbines, plant instrument, air compressors and ensuring water chemistry for boiler water and cooling towers as per OEM standards. Plan major shutdowns for preventive maintenance of power plant
 Ensuring a culture of safety as per standards, compliance of Integrated Management system and compliance of Energy Management System.  Ensuring all statutory compliances with special focus on renewal of Boiler Certificate through annual inspection, remaining Life Assessment as per IBR norms, renewal of certificate through testing pressure vessels, lifting tools & tackles, EOT cranes, etc.
 Ensuring continuous improvement through audits and corrective action for energy and water conservation measures.

4. Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering from an institute of repute.
 Certifications/ training in turbines operations, gen-sets and coal fired boilers will be integral.

5. Experience:
 Around 25 years of post-qualification experience in operation and maintenance of coal power plants.
 Out of which 5-7 years’ experience in a leadership role of heading Power Plant Operations.

6. Knowledge:  Comprehensive knowledge of boilers, turbines, plant instrument, air compressors, cooling towers, etc.  In-depth knowledge in latest concepts, trends and practices of large scale Power Plant with special emphasis to Coal Fired Power Plant.
