Job Description –Mechanical Inspection
Job Title : DGM/GM – Mechanical Inspection
Location : West Bengal Region
Department : Reliability & Inspection
Reports To (Functionally) : Head – Reliability & Inspection

1. Purpose: 

The main scope of the role is to manage all inspection based assessment of 
operational reliability in the plant. Ensure regular predictive maintenance and 
conditional monitoring inspections for both rotary and static equipment in the plant. 
Provide troubleshooting assistance for technical failures in the equipment. Manage 
instruments and spares used in the plant inspection. Identify best practices and 
equipment to improve plant inspection activities. Provide technical assistance as 
required to the maintenance teams.

3. Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

 Manage both rotary condition monitoring team and static instruments inspection 
team for day to day activities and administrative purposes.
 Mitigate the risk of accidents in the plant through inspection. Prevent 
repeat/surprise failure cases for critical equipment through diagnostic 
management. Ensure risk minimisation from rotating process equipment failure 
through predictive maintenance and condition monitoring programs.
 Review all conditional monitoring activities for rotary and static equipment and 
liaison with the relevant internal stakeholder for corrective actions. 
 Ensure risk based inspections are carried out in a time bound fashion. Review 
at-risk critical equipment for the entire complex and predict in advance the state 
of the machinery, to minimise the impact on production by maintenance 
activities. Also provide the inputs to the maintenance team and the production 
planning team. 
 Ensure non-destructive testing services are provided to the both rotary and 
static equipment in the plant. Ensure all aspects of mechanical integrity through 
proper design and installation of equipment.
 Ensure that the inspection department instruments are operational and in 
service as and when required. Monitor procurement of new equipment/service 
maintenance following all the protocols. Identify the relevant vendors and 
stakeholders for procurement of conditional monitoring equipment and 
contracts. 
 Assist the Mechanical and Electrical engineering teams during maintenance 
execution and post maintenance quality assurance. Supervise any new projects 
for upgradation of existing systems to enhance reliability and sustainability.
 Ensure compliance with best practices in conditional monitoring such as lube oil 
and wear debris analysis, turbo machinery diagnostics and asset performance

4. Qualifications:

Full Time BE/BTech in Mechanical Engineering from an institute of repute.
ASNT Certification in Vibration Monitoring and Non-destructive Testing is 
desirable.
 
5. Experience:

Around 20-25 years of post-qualification experience in large scale 
Petrochemical / Refinery complex in plant maintenance (primarily in 
inspection area).

6. Knowledge:

 Comprehensive knowledge of Business objective of the organisation, 
addressing any cross functional issues.
 In-depth knowledge in latest concepts, trends and practices of large scale 
process industries with special emphasis to Inspection in Petrochemicals / 
Refinery industries.

7. Skills & Behaviour:

 The incumbent needs to be a strong leader with an ability to personally 
counsel employees at all levels below him in Mechanical Inspection
Department. 
 He must have good commercial acumen, be a persuasive communicator, 
possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and be capable of 
thinking strategically. 
 He should have an excellent man-management skills and building 
relationships, especially with external and internal stakeholders, at the senior 
level.
